How Circles uses AI
Last updated: 2026-10-18
Circles uses AI in two places, both to read something you typed. The only thing that goes to an AI is the words you type there, with your friends' names swapped out. Your friends' details never go. Everything else, including the suggestions about when your friends are free, is worked out by Circles itself.
You type
“coffee tmrw 2pm with Sarah”
Circles
Swaps Sarah for Friend A
Keeps to itself
- Your friends' names
- Everyone's free time
- Plans and circles
- Chats, location and calendar
Google's AI
Reads:
“coffee tmrw 2pm with Friend A”
Fills in a draft:
Coffee · Tomorrow 2pm · Friend A
You check it
Circles puts Sarah back and finds which Sarah you mean.
Coffee · Tomorrow 2pm · Sarah Kim
Where AI is used
- Typing a plan. Type something like “coffee tomorrow 2pm with Sarah” and Circles fills in the plan: what, when, where and who. You check it and tap Send.
- Describing your week. Write something like “free weeknights after 7, busy Saturday” and Circles turns it into free and busy times. You can fix or remove any of them before you save.
Both are optional. You can always fill in a plan or your week yourself.
What the AI reads
Only the words you typed, plus what it needs to read dates and times: today's date, your time zone, the current time, and whether your phone writes dates day-first or month-first.
If you type a friend's or a circle's name, Circles swaps it for a placeholder like “Friend A” before the AI reads it, and puts the name back when the draft comes back.
What the AI never gets
- Your friends' names, usernames or profiles
- Anyone's free time, statuses or plans
- Your circles or their names
- Your chats, location or calendar events
- Your name, email address or phone number
After the AI has read your text, Circles matches the names in it to your friends and circles itself.
Why your friends' details stay out of AI
- They didn't agree to it. Your friends shared their names, free time and plans with you, not with an AI company.
- The AI doesn't need them. Circles' own code works out that “Sarah” means your friend Sarah, so the AI never has to know who she is.
- Less sent, less at risk. Details that never leave Circles can't be kept, leaked or misused somewhere else.
What isn't AI
Suggestions like “you, Bob and Carol are free Saturday,” finding a time that works, reminders, and who can see your status all come from Circles' own code and the settings you chose. No AI model sees that data.
What we can't control
- Your own AI apps. If you copy a plan, a screenshot or your friends' names into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any other AI app, that's between you and that company. Circles can't see it or stop it.
- What friends do with what you share. Someone who can see your plan or status could paste it into their own AI app, just as they could take a screenshot. That's why every plan and status lets you choose who sees it.
- Everything else you type. Apart from your friends' and circles' names, your words go to the AI as you wrote them, including names of people who aren't your friends on Circles. Leave out anything you'd rather keep private.
Who runs the model
Circles uses Google's Gemini models on Google Cloud (Vertex AI). Google says it doesn't use this data to train its models. Google may keep requests for a short time for caching and abuse monitoring, as explained in its Vertex AI data governance docs.
